Billie lifted her hand, placed it on her chest, and then leaned against the wall outside of his bedchamber. She couldn’t believe she’d walked in on him while he bathed… Not once had she considered that he might have risen from his sickbed. He’d still seemed so ill the last time she’d been in his company the day before. She didn’t continue to sit by his bedside as she had earlier in his illness. He didn’t require help as he had before.

She’d made a grave error. Now she had the image of his nakedness marked forever in her mind. She would never be able to shake it away. Her imagination would never have done him justice. He was perfection. His skin was still a little pale from being sick, but other than that…he was gorgeous. Rippled muscles on top of muscles and all lean, sleek, edges. Being near him had always made her heart race. Now…it was so uncontrollable she feared it would never beat regularly again.

“What are you doing?” her sister, Chris, asked. “Did the duke yell at you again?” She lifted her chin in defiance. “Someone should put him in his place.”

“We can do it for you,” Carly offered. “It would be our pleasure.”

There was a wicked gleam to Carly’s gaze that put Billie on edge. It was the last thing she needed. The twins could be terrors at times. She had to put an end to their scheming before they did something they would all come to regret. “You will do no such thing,” she ordered. “We are dependent on the duke’s generosity. He might be a bit…difficult…at times, but he isn’t as bad as the two of you think he is.” At least Billie didn’t believe so. “He’s a decent man.” Who had mostly kept his hands to himself. That one kiss didn’t count. Especially since she’d liked it and part of her wished he’d do it again. Even though she’d asked him not to. Billie was being so contrary… “We need to stay here.” Or the Dower House… “We are poor, or did you forget that?”

Chris wrinkled her nose. “You’re not poor. You married that old lecher and there has to be something left to you.”

“Not enough to support five people.” Billie sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. She prayed for patience as she always did when dealing with the twins. She lowered her hand and met Chris’s, then Carly’s gazes. “Promise me you won’t do something foolish.”

Carly held up her hand. “I solemnly promise not to do anything intentionally foolish.”

“Me too,” Chris said, then smirked.

God help her. She didn’t believe them, but for the moment it would have to suffice. “I have to find Teddy and speak to her. Go find something to entertain yourselves with.”

“Oh, we will,” Carly said. “We always do.” With those words the two of them rushed down the hall and down the stairs. Billie followed behind them and went in search of Teddy. She needed advice, and her more sensible sister might have something sage to offer her.
